This album was inspired by a live performance of tracks from my 'Strange Vision' album that I did for WHUP radio's "Pass the Hat" show in Hillsborough NC. The show presents local acoustic artists, making me a somewhat unusual guest, my music being primarily electronic.
I stripped down and reformatted the compositions to accommodate the fact that it was only me performing this time - no band. I also wanted to move away from the inflexible prerecorded backing tracks that I had relied on previously. I decided to have my computer tell my synthesizers in realtime what notes to play and how to play them. I spent a couple months working on making the computer and synthesizers into my "bandmates" capable of performing alongside me.
What emerged was cold, gritty, and spartan compared to the original 'Strange Vision' songs. I liked the sound and the compositions enough to remake the entire collection in the new live format I designed, taking a different approach to producing and recording to learn alternative ways of composing with my synthesizers and violin.
After the WHUP show, I acquired a vintage 1987 Yamaha DX7 synthesizer which has a reputation of being notoriously opaque and difficult to program. However, I decided to learn how to program it from scratch anyway and this work features my original sound design on the instrument. I used my production software, called Ableton Live, to glue the sounds, parts and compositions together.
The overall sound of this work is, in my opinion, bleak, cold, and desolate compared to the warm dreamy darkness of "Strange Vision". I hope you enjoy it : )
